Career profile

Malcolm Fox has worked for Finnforest for the last 40 years and works as a toolroom technician in Boston. He is responsible for supporting and maintaining Boston’s seven production lines.

Can you give us an overview of your role?
I supply and maintain cutter blocks for both profile and PSE planning, for the seven production lines. All blocks have to be assembled, ground and measured to specific CAD drawings in the Finnforest production library. I operate in a team of four, and together we deliver all day-to-day tooling requirements.

What do you like most about your job?
Starting new jobs from scratch and seeing them through to the finished product.

What do you think makes your job important to the business?
The toolroom is a vital link in the manufacturing and machining of most of the Finnforest products.

What is your main motivation?
Continuous improvement within the Company, new technology and new machinery. In addition, the overall benefits and working conditions create a good working atmosphere within the toolroom.

What do you find most challenging and rewarding about your job?
When given a new drawing of a profile that is urgent, we work as a team to ensure completion. The reward is the final product going through the production process.

What are your hobbies out of work?
Having a son and daughter who both own houses keeps me busy with DIY. I enjoy spending time with my three grandchildren, following motorcycle racing, walking, socialising with friends, car mechanics, holidays abroad and surfing the internet.

Manager’s comments
Malcolm and the team work hard to ensure the tooling needs of Boston remain satisfied. The job requires significant planning, coupled with built-in flexibility to respond to tooling problems and changes in schedule/forecast. I think the team work well to meet the demands set and overcome the problems met.
