Team leader
Career profile

Ian Speakman (known to his friends as ‘mop’) has worked for Finnforest since August 2002 and is currently employed as a team leader on the WN1 production line. Ian previously worked for Snowflake Mersey in their wood shavings plant on the site at Widnes. WN1 is a versatile production line which can produce softwood mouldings and PSE’s for both merchant and DIY customers.

Can you give us an overview of your role?

As a team leader, I am responsible for the smooth running and operation of WN1. This includes completing all paperwork to a high level of accuracy, ensuring quality is maintained on all production, setting targets for the line and motivating and encouraging my team of four. The line works a two shift pattern 6am-2pm and 2pm-10pm. This means I start at 6am and finish at 2pm one week, then the following week I start at 2pm and finish at 10pm.

What do you like most about your job?
Being part of a productive team, having the responsibility and maintaining a working relationship with other team members.

What do you think makes your role important to the business?
Being a team leader, I feel I am contributing to the success of the business by promoting continuous improvement within my team and the site as a whole. In doing this, the output and efficiency of the site has increased.

What is your main motivation?
My key focus as a team leader is ensuring my team are happy and are producing a good quality product in the most efficient time.

What do you find most challenging and rewarding about your job?
The most challenging part of my job is learning new skills and putting them in to practice in the workplace. For example we now have regular mill meetings in which I give a short
presentation to everybody on how the line has performed over the previous months.

What are your hobbies out of work?
Following Widnes rugby league, sea fishing, golf and socialising.
